Here's the programme for Workshop concert: Portrait of Unsuk Chin

She first drew attention to herself with the 1993 world premiere of Acrostic Wordplay in London, conducted by George Benjamin, and her violin concert received the 2004 Grawemeyer Award, but she established herself as one of the world's leading composers with the world premiere of her opera Alice in Wonderland at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in 2007. Visual inspirations play an important role in her work: My music reflects my dreams. I try and portray the vision of blinding light and unbelievable wealth of colour I see in my dreams as a game between light and colours in my music, which flow through space but still take on an tangible shape.«

The work you will hear in this concert was inspired by memories from her childhood: Korean travelling salesmen used to go from town to town putting on little shows to promote their wares. Gougalōn is related to an old German verb, and means something like ›pulling the wool over somebody's eyes‹. Unsuk Chin's musical way of thinking can be very theatrical. She turns a childhood memory into a highly eleborate through thought composition with unusual percussion and ways of playing instruments.
