Nina  Šenk, born in 1982, studied composition at the Music Academy in Ljubljana with Pavel Mihelčič before going to Dresden to work with Lothar Voigtländer and the University for Music and Theatre in Munich, where she gained her masters in 2008 under the guidance of Matthias Pintscher. Her many awards include the best composition prize at the Young Euro Classic Festival (Violin Concerto, 2004) and the Prešeren-Prize, Slovenia's highest national award for culture. Her 2023 chamber opera Canvas was a prize winner at Steiermark's Johann Joseph Fux Opera Composition. Her works have been performed at leading festivals including the BBC Proms, the Salzburg Festival, the Musiktagen in Donaueschingen, the NY Phil Biennial, Musica Viva in Munich, Ultraschall in Berlin, Young Euro Classic, the Takefu and Warsaw Autumn festivals, the Witten Tagen for new chamber music,  Musiktagen in Kassel and World Music Days. She joined the Slovenian Academy of Science and the Arts in 2019 and won the first ever Bank Composition Prize in 2024, for November Night which was performed for the first time by Wien Modern that year. Her already extensive list of works includes works for solo instruments, chamber groups, large scale orchestraI works and many works for voice and choirs and, along with Canvas, another opera: Maripurgi, which was performed for the first time in Maribor in 2020.
