Das Lied von der Erde - online

Gustav Mahler 1860–1911
Das Lied von der Erde

A symphony (1908–1909)
texts based on Hans Bethge's collection of freely translated poems: The Chinese Flute
Adapted for small orchestra by Jens Joneleit (commissioned by Oper Frankfurt, 2011)

1907 was a terrible year for Gustav Mahler, his daughter died of scarlet fever and he was diagnosed with a heart defect: the beauty of a collection of poems translated by Hans Bethge fascinated and calmed him and he set seven of them to music. His Das Lied von der Erde is regarded as his most personal work.

Jens Joneleit's (1968*) adaptation for small orchestra was commissioned by Oper Frankfurt in 2011.

The combination of two wonderful members of Oper Frankfurt's ensemble and players from the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester under GMD Sebastian Weigle promises a gripping and moving interpretation of Mahler's masterpiece.

It has been filmed in advance and available on our website, YouTube and Facebook from 7.30pm on April 2
