Michael Sowa is one of the most interesting illustrators in the world today, best known for books including Bilder aus zwei Jahrtausenden / Pictures from Two Thousand Years, Arche Sowa / Sowa's Ark and Der kleine König Dezember / Little King December. Exhibitions of 130 of his works were seen in Tokyo, Kyoto and Yokohama in 2009. He was awarded the 2004 Berlin Book Prize (children's book category) for his book Prince Tamino and the 2013 Göttinger Elch Prize in honour of his life's work. His work became known to an even wider public through the very successful film Die fabelhafte Welt der Amélie / Amélie's Fabulous World. And who can forget his extraordinary »Filmhund / Film Dog« and »Geflügel mit Perlen / Hens in Pearls«. Many of his drawings have been published in satirical magazines including Titanic and he has designed posters and illustrations for Germany's Green Party. Many of his works have been seen in exhibitions. This production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at Oper Frankfurt, which he designed with Vincent Callara, is the first and, to date, only opera he has worked on.
