Hans Walter Richter has directed Menotti’s The Medium, the world premiere of Langemann’s Anna Toll and Stravinsky’s Die Geschichte vom Soldaten / A Soldier’s Tale at Oper Frankfurt. This production of Mercadante’s Francesca da Rimini was first seen at the Tirol Festival in Erl last December, the first ever performances in Austria, where he also directed a new Le Postillon de Lonjumeau, for which he was nominated for »Director of the Year 2022« (Opernwelt). Other productions have included Madama Butterfly at Theater Münster, Tosca at the Landestheater in Coburg and operas including Così fan tutte, Holst’s Savitri, Donizetti’s Linda di Chamounix and Krieg. Stell dir vor, er wär hier / War. Imagine if it were here at the Stadt Theater in Gießen. His Linda di Chamounix was nominated for »Best Production 2015« in Die Deutsche Bühne. He has been a director’s assistant (which involves rehearsing revivals) at Oper Frankfurt since 2008, working closely with people including Keith Warner, Vera Nemirova, Christof Loy, Jens-Daniel Herzog and Marco Arturo Marelli. Guest assistant directing work has taken him to places including the Vienna State Opera and Bregenz Festival. Before coming to Frankfurt he was a member of the Stadttheater in Gießen, where he was responsible for many productions including the first performances in Germany of Jake Heggie’s For a Look or a Touch, Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, Grigori Frid’s Briefe des van Gogh (van Goth’s letters) and Maxwell Davies’ Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot / Eight Songs for a Mad King. Hans Walter Richter studied theatre, film, media and musicology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. He has been teaching direction at the University for Music in Würzburg since 2022.
