The Armenian mezzo-soprano Varduhi Abrahamyan, one of the most sought-after singers in her fach, is making her debut at Oper Frankfurt singing the title role in Carmen, a role she has sung at places including the Opéra national de Paris, the Hamburg State Opera, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Zurich Opera, the Bolshoi in Moscow, Teatro Regio di Torino and the Bayerische Staatsoper. After studying at the Conservatoire in Yerevan she maintained close ties to the Opéra national de Paris, where roles have included Carmen, Preziosilla (La forza del destino), Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera), Paulina (Pique Dame), Olga (Eugene Onegin), Mistress Quickly (Falstaff) and Maddalena (Rigoletto). Other engagements have taken her to houses including the Theater an der Wien, the Grand Théătre de Genève, Opera Hong Kong, Ópera Las Palmas, the Opéra de Marseille, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her repertoire includes Dalila (Samson et Dalila), Maffio Orsini (Lucrezia Borgia), Cornelia (Giulio Cesare in Egitto), Isabella (LʼItaliana in Algeri), Bersi (Andrea Chénier), Bradamante (Alcina), Malcolm (La donna del Lago), Néris in Luigi Cherubini’s Médée and Lydia Tchoukovskaïa in Bruno Mantovani’s Akhmatova. During the 2022/23 season she made her debuts at Covent Garden in London, singing Bradamante, and the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples as Fricka in Wagner’s Die Walküre. She started the 2023/24 season off with Maometto II at the Teatro di San Carlo and Eboli (Don Carlo) at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Future plans include Verdi’s Requiem with the Dresden Philharmonie and concerts in Vienna and Paris.
