Born in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, Clare Tunney, who makes her debut at Oper Frankfurt this evening stepping in at short notice to sing the Mother in Hänsel und Gretel, joined the International Opera Studio at the Staatsoper in Stuttgart in 2020/21, where roles have included Papagena, Pamina, 1st Lady in Die Zauberflöte and 3rd Town Crier (The Condemnation of Lucullus). During their 2022/23 she sings this role in Hänsel und Gretel, Frau Herz (Der Schauspieldirektor), Helmwige (Die Walküre), Berta (Il barbiere di Siviglia), the soprano role in the world premiere of JOiN’s MELUSINE. Was machst du am Samstag/What are you doing on Saturday? and Fee (fairy) Amaryllis in the world premiere of Der Räuber Hotzenplotz / Hotzenplotz the Robber. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and Royal Academy’s International Opera School and was awarded a scholarship by the Georg Solti Accademia in 2019, which enabled her to take part in masterclasses held by Richard Bonynge, Barbara Frittoli and Roberto Frontali. Other roles have included Mimì in La Bohème, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and the title role in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. Awards have included 1st prize at the National Mozart Competition and the 2017 Art Song Prize. She reached the semi-finals of the International Elizabeth Connell Prize for Young Dramatic Sopranos and won 2nd place at the Royal Academy of Music’s Isabel Jay Prize (2016, 2017, 2018).
