Klaus Zehelein was at the helm of Frankfurt Opera with Michael Gielen from 1977 - 1987, turning it into a place of discovery and re-examination of text and music for the stage. A visionary dramaturge, meticulous thinker, pragmatic artistic director, passionate educator, inspiring teacher, and president of the German Stage Association, he shaped the development of opera for half a century. He was awarded the German Theater Prize DER FAUST in 2023 for this, among other honors. His autobiography was published by Theater der Zeit in 2025, to mark his 85th birthday, entitled Extraordinary Moments.
He will be introducing his book at 7pm on June 9 2026, in Oper Frankfurt's Holzfoyer. The evening's hosted by Thomas Koch.
