the (Un)finished

Everyone knows what is meant when they hear the “Unfinished” or "Ninth": Schubert’s Symphony in B minor and Beethoven’s last symphony.  Even though Schubert completed only two movements, he didn't consider them finished while sketching the beginning of a third scherzo movement and other ideas. Mario Venzago, the conductor of this concert, delved into the source material and created his own version of a “Completed” symphony.

Mario Venzago's a composer as well, and these concert open with one of his works, which embraces his Swiss homeland, where people love going up and down mountains.

Richard Strauss wrote his violin concerto when he was only 17, but its inventiveness, cornucopia of harmonic twists and the witty, exquisitely crafted narrative for the violin, prove it's a masterpiece. Caroline Widmann, the soloist, thinks so too, for whom this concerto is a labour of love.
