Kay Voges
Director
Kay Voges was made Intendant of the Schauspiel in Dortmund in 2010, moving to the Volkstheater in Vienna as Director at the start of the 2020/21 season. He is also the founding director of the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund. He started directing plays and operas in 1998. His work has been seen at theatres including the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, Staatsschauspiel in Dresden, the Darmstadt and Kassel state theatres, in Magdeburg, Moers, Münster, Bonn, at Schauspiel Stuttgart and in 2018 for the simultaneous world premiere of Die Parallelwelt / Parallel World at the Berlin Ensemble and Schauspiel Dortmund, and the Volksbühne Berlin in (2019, Don't be evil). He made his very successful debut as an operatic director was in 2013, with Tannhäuser at Oper Dortmund. He directed Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar named Desire (2014) at Schauspielfrankfurt and Weber's Der Freischütz (2015) at the Staatsoper in Hannover. Schauspiel Dortmund was voted second best theatre in the German speaking world by the specialist magazine Theater heute in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and best theatre in Nordrhein-Westfalen by the World on Sunday newspaper in 2016, 2017 und 2018 under his leadership. His 2017 production of Die Borderline Prozession was invited to the 54th Berlin Theatertreffen (a big honour), and his 2012 Ibsen double bill Nora / Ghosts and 2019 production of Thomas Bernhard's Der Theatermacher were invited to the NRW Theatertreffen. Einige Nachrichten an das All / Some News from Outer Space won the main prize for best production at the 2013 NRW-Theatertreffen, and a film about the production won the best direction prize at the Artodocs International Film Festival in St. Petersburg and 2nd prize for best experimental film at the Sunset Film Festival in Los Angeles. His production of Das Fest / The Feast was nominated for a 2013 DER FAUST German theatre prize.
