Award winning British lighting designer John Bishop has worked on around 200 play, operas and ballets around the world. Now he’s back at Oper Frankfurt, where he worked for the first time on Hänsel und Gretel, for this new Kurt Weill / Carl Orff double will – both directed by Keith Warner. Their many productions elsewhere have included Jenůfa at Den Norske Opera Oslo, Elektra at San Francisco Opera, the National Theatre in Prague and Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, An Old Lady pays a Visit at the Theater an der Wien, Doktor Faust and The Great Gatsby at the Semperoper in Dresden, Tannhäuser and Le roi Arthus at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, Le nozze di Figaro at the Teatre Wielki in Warsaw, Sondheim’s Passion at the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte Festival in Montepulciano, the world premiere of Hans Gefor’s Notorious at Göteborg Opera, Tristan und Isolde at the National Theatre in Prague and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Vienna State Opera. He also lit Der Ring des Nibelungen and The Flying Dutchman at Norske Opera in Oslo, Peter Grimes and Le Revenant in Madrid, Don Giovanni in São Paulo, Demon Juice at Covent Garden, Ernani at English National Opera, La Traviata and West Side Story at Welsh National Opera, Albert Herring at Opera North and in Tallin, The Woman in Black in Dubai and lots of productions for Opera Zuid in Maastricht, the Buxton Opera Festival and Kiev Ballet. Recent work has included Simon Boccanegra at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, Il tabarro / Pagliacci at Seoul Arts Center, Tosca at Nederlandse Reisopera, L’elisir d’amore at Den Jyske Opera in Aarhus and world premieres of John Metcalf’s Under Milk Wood at the Taliesin Theatre in Swansea and Anthony Bolton’s The Life and Death of Alexander Litvinenko at Grange Park Opera. Future projects include Simon Boccanegra at Opera Philadelphia and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and in Oman.
