The director Johannes Erath is back at Oper Frankfurt, where he has enjoyed great success in recent seasons with Verdi's Otello, Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Weber's Euryanthe, Eötvös' Angels in America, the world premiere of Arnulf Herrmann's Der Mieter / The Tenant and Szymanowski's King Roger, which had never been performed in Frankfurt, for this new Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Other recent highlights have included Spontini's La vestale at the Theater an der Wien, I masnadieri at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Caruso in Cuba as part of the Nationale Opera in Amsterdam's Opera Forward Festival, Goldschmidt's Beatrice Cenci at the Brengenz Festival and Massenet's Manon, Gounod's Faust and Saariaho's L'amour de loin at Cologne Opera. Other projects have includedVissi d’arte at Düsseldorf Opera and the world premiere of Il crepuscolo dei sogni at the Teatro Massimo in Parlermo. His productions of Le nozze di Figaro and Hoffmanns Erzählungen / The Tales of Hoffmann at the Semperoper in Dresden were also seen at the Savonlinna Opera Festival and in Helsinki, and Hoffmanns Erzählungen was also performed at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia recently. He has enjoyed a close relationship with Oper Graz for many years, where productions have included Korngold's Die tote Stadt /The Dead City – which won the Austrian Music Theatre Prize, Lulu, Don Giovanni, Elektra and Lohengrin (which was also seen at Norske Opera in Oslo). Johannes Erath was awarded the 2008 Götz Friedrich Prize for his production of Massenet's Cendrillon at Theater Bern. He played the violin in the Volksoper in Vienna's orchestra and in the Vienna Philharmonic's Orchester Akademie before his passion for direction was realised.
