The Slovenian baritone Domen Križaj studied music and medicine in Ljubljana and was a member of Salzburg's 2013 Young Singers Project. Roles in Frankfurt during the 2023/24 season include Rodrigo in Don Carlo,  Almaviva & Wolfram von Eschenbach in new productions of Le nozze di Figaro and Tannhäuser, and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte. Last season he thrilled audiences with the Graf (role debut) in Capriccio, Papageno and the Tsar in the new Die Zauberflöte and Kurt Weill's  Der Zar lässt sich fotografieren / The Tsar wants his Photograph Taken and the title role in Eugene Onegin, a role he sang at Alden Biesen Summer Opera in 2016, and in 2021/22 he enjoyed great success with his first Don Alfonsos in Così fan tutte, Sharpless in a new Madama Butterfy and the Herald in Lohengrin, a role he sang for the first time at the 2021 Tirol Festival in Erl, where he returned in triumph in 2022 for the title role in Chausson's Roi Arthus and Brahms' German Requiem. Recent guest engagements have included Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana at the Festspielhaus in Baden Baden, Rodrigo in Don Carlo at Slovenia's National Theatre in Maribor and Sharpless in Madam Butterfly at the 2023 Bregenz Festival.  During his first season in Frankfurt he sang Albert in Werther, a role he also sang at Croatia's National Theatre in Rijeka, and Lescaut in Manon Lescaut. He has also appeared here in recital, in the Holzfoyer and on the main stage. He was a member of Theater Basel's Opera Studio from 2017-2019, during which time he sang roles including Purcell's King Arthur, Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. His repertoire also includes Baron Douphol in Verdi's La traviata, Sam in Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, Albert in Dai Fujikura's Goldkäfer / Golden Beetle and the Médecin in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande. While a member of the Ensemble in Basel in 2019/20 he sang Marcello (La Bohème) and in Al gran sole carico d’amore and La mère coupable. This young artist is much sought-after for concert work, appearing regularly with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic and Camerata Salzburg, and recitals. Domen Križaj has won prizes at many competitions, including 2nd prize at the 2019 Bertelsmann Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition in Gütersloh.
