Pier Giorgio Morandi, a regular and popular guest, is back at Oper Frankfurt, where he has conducted Otello, La fanciulla del West, Simon Boccanegra, Macbeth, Boito’s Mefistofele, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda (in concert), Rigoletto (2020), La Forza del Destino and Puccini’s Il trittico and performances of a new production Madama Butterfly (last season), for the first revival of Puccini's masterpiece. Recent engagements have included Norma at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Tosca at the at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Turandot at the Tokyo Spring Festival and La Bohème at the Teatro Regio in Turin. In recent seasons he has conducted operas including Tosca, Un ballo in maschera, Aida, L’elisir d’amore, Manon Lescaut, La traviata, Attila, Lucia di Lammermoor and Il barbiere di Siviglia at houses including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna and Hamburg state operas, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper in Dresden, Zurich Opera, the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie in Brussels, La Scala Milan, Royal Opera in Stockholm, Arena di Verona and the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. After studying with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa and assisting Riccardo Muti and Giuseppe Patané at La Scala, Pier Giorgio Morandi was named Deputy Chief Conductor of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome in 1989. He was also Chief Guest Conductor of the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Opera in Stockholm.
