This young director is making her debut at Oper Frankfurt with Handel's Partenope. Born in Tokyo to German parents, she grew up in various countries and became interested in the performing arts from an early age, particularly film, dance and direction. In recent years she has made a name for herself in Europe with several prize-winning productions and was nominated for »Best Newcomer« at the 2019 International Opera Awards. Her production of Britten's Rape of Lucretia won the 2019 OFFIE Award in London. Julia Burbach's first encounter with opera was when she gained work experience with Christof Loy at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, going on to assist him and rehearse revivals of his productions. She has rehearsed revivals worldwide and enjoys a close relationship with the Royal Opera House in London, where she was Resident Staff Director for some years. Her own recent productions have included Alcina for Oper Wuppertal, Semele at the Shanghai International Arts Festival, Die Walküre at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, Der Ring des Nibelungen at Grimeborn Festival, L’amico Fritz and Eugene Onegin at Holland Park Opera in London, Edmea at the Wexford Festival, La bohème at Theater Bielefeld, Das Wundertheater at the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, Manon Lescaut at Theater Kiel, Der singende Teufel / The Singing Devil at Oper Bonn, Eugene Onegin at Oper Lübeck and L’elisir d`amore at the Statni Opera in Prague. She has been working regularly with the choreographer Cameron MacMillan since 2021. Their future plans include Wagner's The Flying Dutchman and Rossini's Le comte Ory. Julia Burbach is a mentor for young directors at British Youth Opera.
