Metamorphosen
study for 23 solo strings
Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen was composed during the last months of World War II, by which time the opera houses where he worked in Dresden, Munich and Berlin had already been reduced to rubble, a testimony, given by warm strings: ten violins, five violas and cellos and three doublebasses, a symphonic adagio, a lament.
