The so called »Fin de siècle« was a more ambivalent time than possibly any other: Vienna was influenced by an optimistic, happy-go-lucky euphoria and an apocalyptic atmosphere. The craze for transience, decay, sensuality and decadence reached new heights on the boulevards, in salons and concert halls throughout Europe. Works by two of three central characters, Gustav Mahler and Robert Fuchs, conjure up the inspiring, yet enigmatic atmosphere in that city at the turn of the century.
