Happy New Ears

This series of workshop concerts launches its 30th season! A good excuse for a something special: honouring the great Hans Zender by performing his Cabaret Voltaire. (world premiere 2002). As was the case last season, two concerts belong to the ICCS (International Composer & Conductor Seminars) and their up and coming artists: the Lucerne Festival Academy have been invited along with selected composers who are involved with the rich in tradition Warsaw Autumn Festival. There are also two portrait concerts for the renowned conductor and composer Johannes Kalitzke and composer Brigitta Muntendorf.

January 29 2024 Portrait concert for Johannes Kalitzke

As a conductor he’s no newcomer to Happy New Ears: professor Johannes Kaltitzke has enjoyed a close relationship with the Ensemble Modern for many years. High time to dedicate a concert to him with his conductor’s hat on. The Ensemble Modern performed the world premiere of his opera Captain Nemo’s Library at the 2022 Schwetzingen Festival. His catalogue contains quite a few pieces for the stage and film. His Werckmeister Harmonies, written in 2020, turns Béla Tarr’s 2000 film by the same name into music, without the need for film. Come and hear the composer discussing the work with film editor Nina Goslar.
