Cracks - Democracy in times of change

discussion about »Anti democratic rallying & how powerful emotions can be«

After the recent a symposium, After Us, the Deluge, in partnership with the Institute for Social Research and Sigmund Freud Institute, which made reference to events including our recent new production of Reimann's Melusine, we launched a new series titled “Breaking points — Democracy in Times of Regression”, thus contributing to research funded by Hessen on “Challenges of Democracy in Times of Regression: Times, Spaces, and Discourses.” We aim to bring together academic and artistic views and opinions. It starts off with a discussion in the Chagall Saal about: “Anti-Democratic Mobilisation and the Power of Emotions.” Come and hear Manuel Schmitt, director of our new production of Rossini's Tancredi, social psychologist Vera King (Executive Director of the Sigmund Freud Institute) and the sociologist Stephan Lessenich (Director of the Institute for Social Research). The opera tells of a (real or imagined) threat to a community from internal and external dangers, and the themes of isolation and radicalisation this engenders.

to be continued after the performance of Tancredi  that evening in an Discussing an Opera (in German) event
