Belarus born set designer Zinovy Margolin is working in Frankfurt for the first time, on another Frankfurt First: Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre. He designed many sets for the Mariinski in St. Petersburg and Bolschoi in Moscow for operas including Tristan und Isolde, Le nozze di Figaro, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Verdi’s Otello, Shostakovitch’s The Nose and Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa. He was awarded the Golden Mask for his sets for Janáček‘s Jenufa and Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, a musical based on Jacques Demy’s film. He works regularly with director Vasily Barkhatov, most recently on productions including The Tales of Hoffmann, La fanciulla del West, Rusalka, Gounod’s Faust, Berlioz’ La Damnation de Faust, Mussorgsy’s Khowanshschina and Prokofiev’s The Gambler. He created a spectacular space for a new production of Zimmermann’s Soldaten at Hessen’s Staatstheater in Wiesbaden in 2015/2016, which was followed in 2016/17 by Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, a co-production with the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He also designed sets for the world premiere of Aribert Reimann’s L’ invisible at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he returned in 2023 for Simon Boccanegra, Tosca at the Staatsoper in Hannover, The Flying Dutchman at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Korngold’s The Dead City for the Nowaja Opera in Moscow. Future plans include Adriana Lecouvreur at the Bolschoi in Moscow and Turandot at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.
