Chorus Master
Tilman Michael has been Chorus Master at Oper Frankfurt since 2014/15, having previously held the same post at the National Theater in Mannheim. Both were voted »Chorus of the Year« by Opernwelt magazine, and again in 2023 for new productions of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Handel's Hercules in Frankfurt. He was also nominated for »Conductor of the Year«. After completing his studies in Stuttgart and Cologne he was immediately engaged as 2nd Chorus Master at the Hamburg State Opera. He also assisted the Chorus Master at the Bayreuth Festival for ten years. He has also worked at the opera companies in Amsterdam, Dresden, Moscow, Stuttgart and Vienna, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Chorus, BR, MDR, NDR and WDR radio choruses, and given concerts with all sorts of vocal ensembles in leading concert halls and churches in 25 countries (Europe, Asia and South America) and prepared choruses for more than 150 operas. In addition to his extensive operatic repertoire he is also passionate about a cappella choral music, choral/symphonic works and contemporary music (world premieres of works by Adriana Hölszky, Bernhard Lang, Olga Neuwirth and Salvatore Sciarrino). Tilman Michael is a professor and jurer with the Conductors Forum (Deutscher Musikrat). Last season he conducted at the Tirol Festival in Erl (Bach's Christmas Oratorio) and trained the chorus at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich (Lohengrin), in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus (Brahms Requiem) and the WDR Chorus in the Elb Philharmonie, the Philharmonie in Cologen and Konzerthaus in Dortmund.
