The American director Ted Huffman made his debut in Germany with a stunning production of Rinaldo in the Bockenheimer in Frankfurt, returning to the company last season for this new production of Die Zauberflöte and a new take on Handel's Orlando. He recently directed Stockhausen's Sunday of Light at the Cité de la Musique-Philharmonie in Paris, Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the world premiere of Stefan Wirth's Girl with a Pearl Earring at Zurich Opera (voted »World Premiere of the Year« 2022 by Opernwelt) andThe Time of our Singing at theThéâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels (voted »Best World Premiere« at the 2022 International Opera Awards). Other recent projects have included Braunfel's Die Vögel / The Birds at the Opéra National du Rhin, Handel's Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen,  Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Salome at Cologne Opera, a Trouble in Tahiti / Clemency double bill in the Nationale Opera Amsterdam's Opera Forward Festival and Madama Butterfly at Zurich Opera, where he returns in 2022/23 for Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. Ted Huffman became internationally well known for productions of contemporary operas. The world premieres of Philip Venables' 4.48 Psychosis, based on Sarah Kane's last play, at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London won the 2016 UK Theatre Award, and Denis & Katya (which was performed at Opera Philadelphia, Music Theatre Wales, Opéra Orchester National Montpellier, De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam and the Staatsoper in Hannover) won the 2019 Fedora Generali Preis and was nominated for an International Opera Award. Their The Faggots and their Friends between Revolutions can be seen at the 2023 Aix-en-Provence and Bregenz festivals. Other world premieres were Luke Styles’ Macbeth at the Glyndebourne Festival and Arthur Lavandier's Le premier meurtre at Lille Opera and the first performances in Europe of Ana Sokolovic's Svádba at the Aix-en-Provence Festival (which was also performed at Opéra Angers-Nantes and the Grand Théâtre in Luxemburg). Born in New York, Ted Huffman studied at Yale University and was a member of San Francisco Opera's renowned Merola Opera Program.
