Allan Clayton, making his long-awaited debut at Oper Frankfurt singing the title role in Peter Grimes, has sung roles at leading opera houses around the world, including David (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) at Covent Garden in London and the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Ferdinand (Miranda) at the Opéra Comique in Paris and in Barrie Kosky productions at the Komische Oper Berlin including Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Castor (Castor et Pollux), Jim Mahoney (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) and the title role in Candide. He sang his first Peter Grimes in 2020/21, at the Teatro Real in Madrid, before thrilling audiences with the role at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Covent Garden and the Opéra national de Paris. His repertoire ranges from the baroque (Handel's Jephta, Samson and Semele) to Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex. He sang the title role in the world premiere of Brett Dean's Hamlet in Glyndebourne, a role with which he also enjoyed great success at the Met in New York and Bayerische Staatsoper. Other contemporary works in his concert and operatic repertoire, some written for him, were composed by Tom Coult, Jonathan Dove and George Benjamin, in whoseWritten on Skin he sang Third Angel/John in the world premiere. He was awarded the 2025 Lawrence Olivier Award for his interpretation of Christian in Mark-Anthony Turnage's Festen. He studied at St. Johnʼs College in Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music in London.
