Matthew Polenzani is regarded as one of the leading lyric tenors of his generation. Now he's back in Frankfurt, where he thrilled audiences in 2008/09 as Edgardo di Ravenswood in Lucia di Lammermoor followed by, a year later, the title role in Berlioz’ La damnation de Faust, to take part in this special open air concert as part of Frankfurt's celebrations for the birth of democracy in Germany 175 years ago. He won the Metropolitan Opera's 2008 Beverly Sills Artist Award, where he is a regular guest. Recent highlights have included lead roles in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore, Maria Stuarda and  Roberto Devereux, Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and Rodolfo (La Bohème). Matthew Polenzani started the season off singing Giasone in Cherubini's Médée at the Met. After enjoying great success with the title role (role debut) in Verdi's Don Carlo in New York in 2021/22 he sang it again at Teatro di San Carlo and the title role in Massenet's Werther at Houston Grand Opera. He recently sang the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) at the Hamburg State Opera where he can currently be heard in the title role of Les contes d'Hoffmann. He then adds two roles to his repertoire: Jean in a concert performance of  Massenet's Hèrodiade at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Orombello in Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda at the Teatro di San Carlo. Matthew Polenzani won the 2004 Richard Tucker Award and 2017 Opera News Award.
