Matthias Matschke
actor
Matthias Matschke grew up in a village on the skirts of Hessen's Odenwald. He studied German and theology in Frankfurt before going to the University for the Arts in Berlin to further his acting studies. Now one of the most sought-after actors in Germany is making his debut at Oper Frankfurt as the Treasurer in Offenbach's The Bandits. He appears regularly at theatres including the Volksbühne Berlin, the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, and theatres in Hamburg and Zürich and was voted »Up and Coming Actor of the Year« by critics from Theater heute magazine in 1998, the same year he appeared at Bobinet in Christoph Marthaler's production of Offenbach's Pariser Leben. He has been performing at the Burgtheater in Vienna since 2011. His first film was Leander Haußmann's Sonnenallee. This was followed by many films made in Germany and international films including The Book Thief and Grand Budapest Hotel. He appears on television too, winning the 2015 Bernd Burgemeister television prize for his portrayal of the title role in The Barschel Case. He played the title role in three series of ZDF's Professor T whodunnits. It would be hard to imagine another actor who can switch between being serious and funny. He was a firm fixture in the cast of Ladykracher with Anke Engelke from 2002 - 2012, appeared in nine series of »Hagen« in the Pastewka comedy series, is a regular guest on the heute show and returned to television in 2025 for a continuation of the success series Sketch History.
