Carmen Artaza

The Spanish mezzo-soprano Carmen Artaza in making her debut at Oper Frankfurt, singing Falliero in this revival of Rossini's Bianca e Falliero. She won prizes at many leading international singing competitions including the 2021 Concurso Internacional de Canto Tenor Francesco Viñas. She started the 2024/25 season off singing her first Rosinas in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Ópera de Oviedo which were followed by Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel) at Oper Bonn and Teresa (La sonnambula) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Recent highlights included her first Suzukis in Madama Butterfly at Bilbao Opera and Dorabellas, in Martin Berger's new production of Mozart's Così fan tutte under Michelle Spotti at the Hannover State Opera and performances at the Komische Oper and Philharmonie in Berlin, the Teatro de la Zarzuela and Teatro Real in Madrid, where she enjoyed a triumph in a Viñas Competition Opera Gala. In 2024 she sang the title role in Jesus Torres' Transito in Valencia's Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. She took part in the 2019 Salzburg Festival's Young Singers Project, making her debut there singing Bradamante in the world premiere of Marius Felix Lange's opera The Song of the Magic Island. Concert work has included appearances with musicians including Kammerorchester Basel, the London Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, the Academy for Alte Musik in Berlin, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, Mozarteum Orchester, Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony and the Konzerhaus Orchester Berlin. She was born in San Sebastián and studied the violin before concentrating on singing.
