Vincenzo Scalera was born to Italian-American parents in New Jersey, USA, and started playing the piano when he was five. After training at the Manhattan School of Music he worked as an assistant at New Jersey State Opera before going to Italy to further his studies. He started at La Scala Milan in 1980 as chief coach and pianist, assisting conductors including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Gavazzeni and Carlos Kleiber. He has worked at many of the world’s leading festivals, including those in Edinburgh, Martina Franca, Jerusalem and Istanbul, at Les Chorégies d’Orange, Carinthischen Summer, Salzburg festivals and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. He has accompanied many well known singers including Carlo Bergonzi, Andrea Bocelli, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Juan Diego Flórez, Leyla Gencer, Raina Kabaivanska, Katia Ricciarelli, Renata Scotto, Cesare Siepi and Lucia Valentini Terrani at leading venues around the world. His discography includes recordings with Renata Scotto, Carlo Bergonzi, José Carreras and Anita Rachvelishvili. He recently played for Sondra Radvanovsky and Piotr Beczala in a live streamed concert from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. You can hear him on another recording with Anita Rachvelishvili - Élégie (Sony) and playing the cembalo on the soundtrack of a film of La Cenerentola and the world’s first recording of Il viaggio a Reims, both conducted by Claudio Abbado. Vincenzo Scalera teaches at La Scala’s Accademia d’Arti e Mestieri dello Spettacolo in Milan.
