The tenor Stephen Matthews, from Wolverhampton, started his studies on a vocal scholarship from St. John’s College in Cambridge, appearing with the Cambridge University Opera Society and singing roles including Marco in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Starveling in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream while he was there. After passing his exams in 2017 he continued his studies at the State University for Music and the Performing Arts in Mannheim, gaining his masters in singing with Prof. Timothy Sharp. This young singer is currently training for his masters in operatic singing with Prof. Burkhard Fritz. He sang the Sailor in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and the title role in Bizet’s Le Docteur Miracle in the opera school there. In 2023 he performed Idamante in scenes from Mozart‘s Idomeneo. He was sponsored by Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Rhein-Neckar in 2022 and gave seven concerts in old people’s homes near Heidelberg and Mannheim, singing works including Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe cycle. Other solo engagements have taken him to London, Cambridge, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Heidelberg, Wales, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. He will sing Adam in the world premiere of Gottes Schöpfung: Unsere Erde / God’s Creation: Our Planet by Christiane Michel-Ostertun in Mannheim in June 2023, followed by Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis op. 24 and Benjamin Britten’s Winter Words in July. He is making his debut at Oper Frankfurt singing in this new Britten The Prodigal Son / The Burning Fiery Furnace double bill.
