Cornelia Schmidt began gaining experience in theatres before studying architecture in Dresden. After assisting on dance productions whilst still a student she started working at the Staatstheater in Kassel as a set and costume assistant. In 2011 she went to Theater Basel as set design assistant, where she worked on costumes for Calixto Bieito's productions of De Rerum Natura and Bluthochzeit / Blood Wedding and assisted on sets for Bluthochzeit and Föhn – Ein zyklisches Wetterspiel / A Cyclical Weather Game  (director: Christian Zehnder). She was costume assistant at Schauspiel Frankfurt for two seasons (2015/16 & 2016/17) for whom she also designed the set for Vatersprache / Father Language. Cornelia Schmidt has assisted on productions directed by, amongst others, Christoph Marthaler, Christof Loy, Calixto Bieito, Michael Thalheimer, Ulrich Rasche and Kay Voges. She won Graz's 2017 Ring Award for her set and costume designs for Don Pasquale. She now works freelance on operas and plays.
