David Alden, one of the most sought-after directors in the world, who directed this production of Rossini's La gazza ladra, also produced wonderful productions of Chabriers L’Étoile and Schreker's Der Schatzgräber / The Treasure Hunter for the company. Highlights in this American's calendar this season include Anna Bolena at Zürich Opera and Otello at Grange Park Opera. His production of Janáček's Jenůfa won him an Olivier Award, and Britten's Peter Grimes (both were for English National Opera) won the South Bank Show Award. Recent work has included Ariodante at the Bolschoi in Moscow and La Calisto at the Teatro Real in Madrid. David Alden works regularly with leading American and European opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Deutsche and Komische operas in Berlin, the Volksoper in Vienna, New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, the Bayerische Staatsoper and opera houses in Dallas, Graz and Cologne. Productions in earlier seasons included Otello and Pique Dame at ENO, Khovanshchina at Opera Vlaanderen Antwerp / Ghent and three early Verdi operas: La battaglia di Legnano, I due Foscari and I lombardi alla prima crociata at the Hamburg State Opera. He was awarded the 2001 Bavarian Theater Prize.
