Sesto's aria »Parto, ma tu ben mio« starts the evening off – he leaves Vitellia to go to Rome, instigate a rebellion against Titus and murder him. Procida stirs up unrest too on his return to Sicily in I vespri siciliani - his wonderful »O tu Palermo« ends with the words »rise up against your oppressors«.
Rigoletto's contracted murder of the Duke of Mantua ends in disaster for his daughter Gilda (»Caro nome«) – the world of opera is a dangerous place!
