Matthew Wild is making his debut at Oper Frankfurt withTannhäuser. Productions staged by this South African director have enjoyed great success at leading opera houses in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden and all leading theatres in the land of his birth, where he has won many prizes. He made his debut in Germany in 2016 at Hessen's Staatstheater in Wiesbaden with Katja Kabanová, which was followed by Mozart's Don Giovanni and Puccini's La bohème in Bern. His production of Gershwin's Porgy & Bess at the Theater an der Wien was nominated for four 2022 Austrian Music Theatre prizes, including best production. He recently made his very succesful debut at the Concert Theatre in St. Gallen with Jonathan Larson's Rent and was named Best Director by Toyota US Woordtrofees in Cape Town for his production of Weill's Seven Deadly Sins. While Artistic Director of Cape Town Opera from 2015 - 2021 productions included Gluck's Orphée et Eurydice, Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Wagner's The Flying Dutchman, Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni, Strauss' Salome, Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims, Puccini's Suor Angelica, Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Handel's Alcina. He has also enjoyed success directing musicals: making his debut at Fugard Theatre in 2013 with O’Briens Rocky Horror Show, which won many awards, returning for Cabaret (2015), Bernstein's West Side Story (2015 - 2018), Styne's Funny Girl  (2017) and Cyndi Lauper's Kinky Boots (2019). He staged Humperdinck's Königskinder at the 2021 Tirol Festival in Erl, where he returns this summer for Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa. He makes his debut at the Staatsoper in Budapest in early 2025, with Verdi's Macbeth.
