The Icelandic bass Magnús Baldvinsson studied at the Söngskólinn in Reykjavik and Indiana University School of Music before being made a San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow. His many roles at Oper Frankfurt have included Verdi's Zaccaria (Nabucco), Massimiliano / Moser (Die Räuber / i masnadieri) and Banquo (Macbeth), Wagner's Titurel (Parsifal), Veit Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Landgraf Hermann von Thüringen(Tannhäuser) and Fafner (Ring, CD/DVD - OehmsClassics). His repertoire includes the Grand Inquisitor of Lisbon / High Priest to Brahma (L’Africaine), Mr. Flint (Billy Budd), Tiresias (Oedipe), Tommaso (Tiefland, CD - OehmsClassics), Mozart's Commendatore (Don Giovanni) and the Priest (The Cunning Little Vixen) - available on CD - OehmsClassics. Before the theatre was shut by corona he took part in Martinů's Julietta and sang Marti again in Delius' Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe / A Village Romeo and Juliet. This season you can hear him as the leader of the Carabinieri, the Miller and Reinmar von Zweter in new productions of Offenbach's Die Banditen / The Bandits, Zemlinsky's Der Traumgörge / George the Dreamer and Wagner's Tannhäuser and Montano in Verdi's Otello. In 2021/22 he sang Quince in a new production of Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Bertrand in Iolanta and the Woodcutter (a role he sang at the 2021 Tirol Festival in Erl) in Humperdinck's Königskinder (CD available - OehmsClassics) and Monterone in Rigoletto, which were followed in 2022/23 by sang Kitschiga (role debut) in a new production of Tchaikovsky's The Sorceress (a Frankfurt First), The Father in Britten's The Prodigal Son (new production), the Landlord / Captain in Manon Lescaut and Old Graumann in our unforgettable production of Schreker's Der ferne Klang / The Elusive Sound. Guest engagements have included appearances with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo and at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.
