The American-German conductor Jonathan Stockhammer is appearing at Oper Frankfurt for the first time withThe Cunning Little Vixen. He made his debuts at Opera Vlaanderen this season with Satyagraha and the Staatsballett Berlin with Onegin, and stepped in at short notice to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared regularly at the Opéra de Lyon since 1998, where he led Ravel's L’heure espagnole in 2018. He conducted two works by Wolfgang Rihm: Proserpina and Deus Passus with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2009, made his debuts at New York City Opera with Thomas Adès Powder her Face in 2013, the Vienna State Opera, with a new production of Peter Eötvös Tri Sestri, in 2106 and Zurich Opera with the world premiere of Michael Pelzel's Last Call in 2019. Other recent highlights have included a new production of Philip Glass’ Satyagraha at the Komische Oper Berlin and Luigi Nono's Al gran sole carico d’amore at Theater Basel. His repertoire includes Zemlinsky's A Florentine Tragedy, Sciarrino's Luci mie traditrici and Damon Albarn's Monkey: Journey to the West. Jonathan Stockhammer studied Chinese and Political Science before taking up composition and conducting in his home town of Los Angeles. Whilst still a student he jumped in to conduct a concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and assisted their Chief Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. After graduating he moved to Germany, where he has built up close artistic relationships with European orchestras including the Ensemble Modern, Collegium Novum Zürich and Ensemble Resonanz.
