Katharina Kastening
Assistant Director
Katharina Kastening is a freelance director who started working at Oper Frankfurt as a directors' assistant in 2019/20, which also involves rehearsing revivals. She recently directed Peter Eötvös’ The Golden Dragon and Paderewski's Manru at Oper Halle, the second of which won a 2022 FAUST prize and can be seen again this season at the Opéra nationale de Lorraine in Nancy. Recent productions which she has co-directed with Keith Warner were Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Vienna State Opera), Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Theater an der Wien), La Forza del Destino (Semper Oper Dresden) and they go to Sante Fe later this season for Tosca. She directedTosca at the Emirates Palace Auditorium Abu Dhabi, Offenbach's Daphnis et Chloë at Opera Northern Ireland and Rodrigo for children at the International Handel Festival in Göttingen. She produced streamed events for Oper Frankfurt during corona lockdown in 2021. She works regularly as an assistant and revival rehearser at places including Covent Garden, the Theater an der Wien and Festival Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte Montepulciano. Born in London she gained her bachelors in musicology at the Royal Holloway University of London and then her masters (in text and performance, specialising in direction) at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
