Susanna Laubstein was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and started learning the violin with Jakov Vilnitz when she was seven. She started training as a professional musician with Prof. Vladimir Masel, Prof. Emma Estrina and Prof. Mark Komissarov at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire before going to the University for Music and the Performing Arts in Frankfurt to continue her studies with Prof. Edith Peinemann. She has performed at the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival and was a member of the Orchester of Nations. She took part in many international music courses and festivals run by people including Pinchas Zukerman, Boris Levinsohn and Alfred Lipka. Susanna Laubstein was deputy leader of the Stadttheater in Gießen's Philharmonic Orchestra from 1999 – 2001, the year she joined the Frankfurt Opern- und Museumsorchester.
