The beginning of Brahms' 1st piano concerto is rugged and unwieldy, its opening theme said to have been a shocked reaction to Schumann's despairing leap into the Rhine, an experience Brahms found it difficult to come to terms with, as he did trying to finish this concerto. It was originally conceived as a sonata for two pianos, then a symphony, before this splendid concerto was given to the world, with homages to Robert Schumann, and Clara, hidden in lyrical sections.
We're looking forward to hearing the young American pianist Maxim Lando, making his debut in this series of Symphonic Concerts.
