Manuel Schmitt, a director from Mühlheim, is back at Oper Frankfurt, where he made his debut with a Britten Prodigal Son / Burning Fiery Furnace double bill in 2023, for this new production of Rossini's Tancredi, and he returns in 2026/27 for a new production of Chausson's Le roi Arthus. He has staged works for companies including the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Blacher's Romeo and Juliet), the Musiktheater im Revier (Rossini's Otello and others), the state theatres in Saarbrücken (Aida), Augsburg (La Cenerentola) and Karlsruhe (Lohengrin), theatres in Bielefeld (Greek Passion) and Wuppertal (Erwartung / Der Wald) and musicals, including Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Ghost – A Message from Sam. He also directed McNally's Master Class and the world premiere of Alpha – A Boys' Night out, for the Staatstheater in Nürnberg and the world premiere of a Requiem for a Living Person at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich's Opera Festival. And he directed Carmen and Don Giovanni in the Egypt's Alexandrina Library. His documentary, Glass Between Us, was shown at international film festivals. He studied at Bavaria’s August Everding Theaterakademie in Munich, graduating in direction for opera and plays before going to study at the University for Philosophy in Munich. Manuel Schmitt plays the cello and piano.
