Andreas Voßkuhle was born in Detmold in 1963. He studied law in Bayreuth and Munich, gaining his PhD 1992, and qualified as a professor at Augsburg University in 1998. He has been working as a professor in public law at Freiburg University since 1999 and is director of the Institute for Political Science and Legal Philosophy (Dept. I) there. He specialises in constitutional law, general administrative law, and political and legal theory.  A few weeks after he was voted rector of Freiburg University in 2007 he was named judge and vice-president of the Federal Constitutional Court in May 2008, then its President, from 2010 - 2020. Andreas Voßkuhle has been a member of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 2007, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2018 and Comité 255 (2014–2022). He is currently President of the Senate of the German National Foundation, Chairman of the Association “Gegen Vergessen – für Demokratie” (Against Forgetting – For Democracy), and is on the advisory boards of the Mercator Foundation and the Karenzzeitgremium (Karenzzeit Committee) pursuant to § 6c BMinG. Numerous honours and awards, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, round off his "résumé".
