Kinsun Chan was born in Vancouver and studied dance, art and graphic design in the USA. Ballet companies to which he has belonged included Zurich Ballet under Heinz Spoerli and Basel Ballet under Richard Wherlock. He danced solo in productions by people including Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Hans van Manen and Ed Wubbe. He was choreographer for the Young Choreographers Series at Zurich Ballet and at Stuttgart Ballett. He was then invited to choreograph ballets for the Noverre Gesellschaft at Stuttgart Ballet. His work has since been seen at places including Basel Ballet, the Singapore Dance Theatre, the Tirol Landestheater, Theater in Lucerne, Hong Kong Ballet, the State Opera in Hannover's Ballet, the Royal Ballet School in Antwerp, the John Cranko Ballet School, Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, the Munich Ballet Academy, Zurich Dance Academy and programmes run by the Heinz-Bosl-Foundation. His creation for Hong Kong Ballet went to the Jacobs Pillow Festiva in America and Festival des arts de Saint-Saveur in Québec. He began running the Dance Company at the Theatre in St. Gallen in 2019/20 and took up the post of Ballet Director at the Semperoper at the beginning of the 2024/25 season. He made his debut at Oper Frankfurt with this production of Nielsen's Maskerade.
