Joseph Middleton was described in BBC Music Magazine as »one of the brightest stars in the world of songs and Lieder«. In 2016 he became the first accompanist to receive a Young Artist Award from the Royal Philharmonic Society. He has appeared in recital with many leading singers, including Sir Thomas Allen, Ian Bostridge, Sarah Connolly, Lucy Crowe, Christiane Karg, Christopher Maltman and Mark Padmore at venues including the Wigmore Hall and Royal Opera House in London, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Philharmonie in Cologne and the Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh and Edinburgh festivals. He has enjoyed a close working relationship with the soprano Carolyn Sampson for some time: they toured the US during the 2016/17 season and performed at the BBC Proms for the first time: their recordings include Fleurs and A Verlaine Songbook. Other award winning recordings document Joseph Middleton's artistic achievements, including Strauss Lieder with Louise Alder, Nocturnal Variation with Ruby Hughes, Ludwig Thuille: Lieder with Sophie Bevan and Jennifer Johnston and the complete vocal works of Purcell & Britten with Ruby Hughes, Allan Clayton and Matthew Rose. Joseph Middleton has been running the »Leeds Lieder« Festival since 2014. He is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied the piano.
