Petr Sokolov is making his debut at Oper Frankfurt, singing the title role in this new production of Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa. He grew up in Irkutsk and studied at the Gnessin Music Academy in Moscow where he's been a member of the Stanislavsky Theatre since 2016, singing roles including Marcello (La bohème), Taddeo (L’italiana in Algeri) and Bolkonski (War and Peace), and sings lead Verdi roles, such as Luna (Il trovatore), Renato (Un ballo in maschera) and Germont (La traviata) in Dmitry Bertman's Helikon Theatre. He's a regular guest at leading houses around the world, and recently sang roles including Don Ferdinand (Prokofiev's Betrothal in a Monastery) at the Theater an der Wien, Rodrigo (Don Carlo) and the Four Villains inThe Tales of Hoffmann at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, General Polkan (The Golden Cockerel) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at Stuttgart Opera and Theater Dortmund, where he sang the title role in Nixon in China. Last season he was cast as the Four Villains again in The Tales of Hoffmann at Oper Graz, which was preceded by the title role in Weinberger's Schwanda, the Bagpiper and can be heard there soon singing Rodolfo in Leoncavallo's version of La bohème. Other engagements have included Lebedev (The Idiot) at the Theater an der Wien, Jeletzky (Pique Dame) at Stuttgart Opera and Mathias Wiessmann (The Fiery Angel) at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. He was nominated for »Best Actor« by the »Golden Mask« Festival for his portrayal of Humbert in Lolita at the Marinski Theatre. His repertoire includes Eugene Onegin, Escamillo (Carmen), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) and the title role in Handel's Hercules. Petr Sokolov reached the finals of the Bertelsmann Foundation's Neue Stimmen and Francisco Viñas international singing competitions.
