Marko Weigert, who is appearing at Oper Frankfurt for the first time in this new production of Mitridate, re di Ponto, started ballet lessons when he was 6, going on to join the Palucca School in Dresden. He studied dance education and choreography at the University for Music and Theatre in Leipzig. His career as a dancer took off at the toladá dance company in Berlin; before working with the Smafu Company in Vienna, the Dance Laboratory in Berlin and Athens and with Christoph Winkler, Helge Musial, Alex B and Gundula Peuthert. In 1999 he, Sommer Ulrickson and Dan Pelleg co-founded the wee dance company in Berlin, whose co-director he still is. During a 13 year residency at the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater Görlitz Zittau he was lighting designer as well as co-choreographer for all dance productions. He was also lighting designer for The Art of Being Human at the Elb Philharmonie in Hamburg and Remains in the Sophiensälen in Berlin. He choreographed works including Cabaret at Oper Magdeburg and Saarländ's State Theatre and, more recently, worked as choreography assistant on Jesus Christ Superstar at the Komische Oper Berlin. He danced at the Festival in Aix-en-Provence and Opéra Comique in Paris in Jean-Philippe Rameau's Samson (dir: Claus Guth).
