Melanie Lang is making her debut at Oper Frankfurt tonight, stepping in at short notice to sing Mrs Sedley in Peter Grimes. This Austrian mezzo-soprano was born in the USA and grew up in Great Britain, where she graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. While a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein's opera studio roles included the title role in Ravel's L’enfant et les sortilèges - for which she was voted ;»Best Up and Coming Singer in the NRW. She has since sung roles including Carmen, Fricka, Dorabella and Fenena and Hänsel, Mother and the Witch in Hänsel und Gretel, appeared at the Salzburg Festival, Oper Leipzig and returned to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Concert work has taken her to venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Barbican in London, the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf, Philharmonie in Cologne and she appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle. She was a member of the Staatstheater in Oldenburg's ensemble from 2014 - 2024, during which time roles included Fricka and Waltraute ((Der Ring des Nibelungen), Ježibaba (Rusalka), Carmen, Mrs Quickly (Falstaff), Ulrica (Un ballo in maschera), Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking) and Mrs Sedley! She joined the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe's ensemble this season, during which you can hear her in recital and singing, amongst others, Hermia (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Mamma Lucia (Cavalleria rusticana), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier) and Madame de Croissy (Dialogues des Carmélites).
