Matthias Wohlbrecht joined the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe's ensemble in 2004, after time spent in Rostock, Darmstadt and Mannheim. Roles there in recent seasons have included the Captain (Wozzeck), Witch (Hänsel und Gretel) and Herodes (Salome). Other roles this season include Loge (Das Rheingold) at Theater Dortmund and Prinz Pao in Zemlinsky's Der Kreidekreis in Karlsruhe, where this tenor has thrilled audiences with roles including Loge and Mime (Siegfried), Max (Der Freischütz), Aegisth (Elektra), Scaramuccio (Ariadne auf Naxos), the Hunchback (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Jacquino (Fidelio), Walther von der Vogelweide (Tannhäuser), Melot (Tristan und Isolde), Schuiski (Boris Godunow), Walter (Weinberg's Die Passgierin), Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) and servants in The Tales of Hoffmann. His repertoire includes Wolfgang Capito in Hindemith's Mathis der Maler, the title role in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and Yannakos in Martinu's Greek Passion. Guest engagements have included Siegfried-Mime at the Staatstheater Oldenburg, Rheingold-Mime with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra under Myung-Whung Chung, the Witch in Moscow, the Rebel in concert performances of Schönberg's Jacob's Ladder with the Deutsche Symphony Orchestra Berlin under Ingo Metzmacher and Albert (Die tote Stadt / The Dead City) with the  Orchestre de Radio France in Paris. He was made a Kammersänger by Baden-Württemberg in 2022 for his services at the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe. He studied at the University for Music in Würzburg before joining the Belcanto Academy in Milan.
