The Ukrainian soprano Ekaterina Sannikova is making her debut at Oper Frankfurt, stepping in at short notice to sing the title role in this new production of Aida. She joined the Mariinski Theatre‘s Young Atkins Programme after studying at the Conservatoire in St. Petersburg, where she made her debut in 2018 singing Fiordiligi in Cosí fan tutte and now returns as a regular guest, most recently for roles including Mimí (La Bohéme), Tosca, Aida, Leonora (Il trovatore), Chrysothemis (Elektra), Sieglinde (Die Walküre), Joan of Arc in Tchaikovsky’s Maid of Orléans, Maddalena (Andrea Chenier) and the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos. Roles at the Mariinski in earlier seasons included Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta, Nedda (Pagliacci), Micaëla (Carmen), Vera Sheloga/Olga and Kupawa in a Rimsky-KorsakovThe Maid of Pskow / Snowflake double bill, Oksana (The Night before Christmas) and Clara in Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery. Future plans include Tatiana in Eugene Onegin at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and the title role in Aida at Steinbruch St. Margarethen Opera, where she has sung Abigaille (Nabucco). She also sang Tatiana at Zurich Opera, Nastassya Filippovna (The Idiot) at the Theater an der Wien, Lisa (Pique Dame) at the Staatstheater in Wiesbaden and Leonora at Korean National Opera in Seoul. Awards won by this young soprano include the CulturArte prize at the 2021 Operalia competition and 1st prize at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Voice Masters.
