The Romanian tenor Stefan Pop is back in Frankfurt, where he sang Alfredo in La Traviata (2012/13) and Elvino in La sonnambula (2014/15), for Pinkerton in the first revival of last season's new Madama Butterfly. This Operalia prize winner returns to Covent Garden this season for Rodolfo in La Bohème before singing Pinkerton at the Staatsoper Berlin, where he sings the title role in Verdi's Don Carlo for the first time this summer. He sang Pollione in Norma in Bologna and Genoa. Recent highlights have included Cavaradossi (role debut) in Tosca in London and Rodolfo in Liège. He also enjoyed great success with the Duke in Rigoletto in Taormina, Jacopo (I due Foscari) in Parma and Rodolfo at the Vienna State Opera. His repertoire includes Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Adorno (Simone Boccanegra), Foresto (Attila), Macduff (Macbeth), Ismaele (Nabucco) and Cassio (Otello), Gennaro (Lucrezia Borgia), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore), Roberto Devereux, Gounod's Faust and the Italian Singer in Rosenkavalier, which he sang at the Salzburg Festival. He appears at leading opera houses around the world including the Opéra National de Paris, the Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Zurich Opera, the Teatro Real Madrid and New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Ghoerghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca and won the Hariclea Darclée singing competition, Seoul's International Music Competition Seoul and the 2019 Oscar della Lirica Young Generation prize. Stefan Pop was made a Honorary Citizen of his home town of Bistrita in 2015.
