Martina Segna studied set design at the University of Arts in Graz and architecture at Graz’s Technical University before gaining her masters at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. She has been working as a free-lance set designer since 2004, specialising in opera. Engagements have taken her to the Prague State Opera, Theater Basel, the Konzert Theater in Bern, Theater Freiburg, the Prinzregententheater in Munich, Semperoper in Dresden, the National Theatre in Belgrade, Skopje Opera, the Salzburg Easter Festival, the Opéra de Dijon, the Tirol Festival in Erl and Oper Graz, where her set for Schreker’s Der ferne Klang and Anna Sofie Tuma’s costumes were nominated for Austria’s Theatre Prize for »Best Stage Design« (director: Florentine Klepper). The production of Magnard’s Guercœur she worked on with director Dirk Schmeding for Theater Osnabrück in 2019 was voted »Rediscovery of the Year« by Opernwelt magazine. Now she’s back at Oper Frankfurt, after the new production of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites in 2020/21, for the world premiere of Vito Žuraj’s Blühen.
