Manuel Schmitt, a director from Mühlheim, is making his debut at Oper Frankfurt with this Britten Prodigal Son / Burning Fiery Furnace double bill. Recent productions have included Boris Blacher’s Romeo und Julia at the Deutsch Oper am Rhein, The Pearl Fishers and Rossini’s Otello at the Musiktheater im Revier, Die Großherzogin von Gerolstein / The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein and a musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Theater Trier. He also directed McNally’s Meisterklasse / Masterclass and the world premiere of Alpha – ein Männerabend / - a night for the boys at the Staatstheater in Nürnberg and the world premiere of Requiem für einen Lebenden / Requiem for a Living Person for the Bayerische Staatsoper’s Opera Festival. He also staged the German production of the Broadway musical Ghost – Nachricht von Sam / - Message from Sam and Bizet’s Carmen in Egypt’s Library in Alexandria. His documentary film Glass Between Us has been screened at international film festivals. He studied at Bavaria’s August Everding Theaterakademie in Munich, graduating in direction for opera and plays before going to study at the University for Philosophy in Munich. Manuel Schmitt plays the cello and piano and is a regular guest professor at the faculty for cultural studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.
