Olga Shaishmelashvili’s working at Oper Frankfurt for the first time, on Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre. Born in St. Petersburg, she graduated from the Academy for Arts and Design in her home town. Nominated for many prizes, this artist has been working as a freelance costume and set designer since 2011 for opera, dance and drama at leading Russian and international theatres. Engagements have taken her to places including the Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Theater Basel, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Hessen’s Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, the Lithuanian National Theatre for Opera and Ballet in Vilnius, the Mikhailowski Theatre in St. Petersburg and Bolschoi in Moscow. She has also worked at places including the Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Budapest State Opera. She works regularly with the directors Evgeny Pisarev and Vasily Barkhatov, for whom she has designed many costumes including ones for Mussorgsky’s Khowanshschina, Prokofiev’s The Gambler, Gounod’s Faust, Zimmermann’s Soldaten and the world premiere of Aribert Reimann’s L’invisible. Other collaborations have included La fanciulla del West, Madama Butterfly, Simon Boccanegra, The Flying Dutchman and Korngold’s Die tote Stadt / The Dead City. Future plans include Eugene Onegin at Oper Bonn.
